Choosing between them

Which of the Nine Is Right for Your Trip?

Book The Fat Duck in Bray (£550). Nothing else in Britain is close in terms of theatre, invention and sheer strangeness. If you would rather the drama came from the setting than the plate, The Three Chimneys on Skye (£360) is the alternative.

Without hesitation, The Sportsman at Seasalter (£250). A Michelin star in a plain pub on the Kent marshes, ninety minutes from London, with sea salt made outside the door. It is the meal we recommend to more guests than any other.

L'Enclume in Cartmel (£450) includes a guided tour of the farm that grows the menu — nothing else on this list connects field and plate so directly. The Black Swan at Oldstead (£380) is the same idea run by one family.

Ynyshir in Wales (£475). Thirty-plus courses cooked over fire, loud music, no compromises. It is the most exciting four hours of eating in Britain and the one venue we screen guests for before booking.

The Clove Club in Shoreditch (£320) for London or The Kitchin in Leith (£350) for Edinburgh. Both need no car, both run around three to four hours, and both leave the rest of the weekend intact.

Paul Ainsworth at No. 6 in Padstow (£300). Playful, generous and genuinely good with teenagers, in a Cornish harbour town with plenty to do either side of the meal.
